    PUBLIC RELATIONS

    Amy Cheung

We do not live alone. Everyday we come into contact, meet and interact with different people. In order to aid the connections, a PR takes on a role of communication, managing relations and publicizing.

Doing Psychology since a-level has helped me to gain insights into human thoughts and behaviour, which allows me to be more conscious and understanding while getting along with the others. This will be particularly useful when building a bridge between the members of CSS and the SU. Moreover working as a volunteer with children during my last 3 summer holidays highlights on my capacity for passion, caring nature and attentiveness. The possession of such qualities leads me to listen, to interpret as well as to respond the needs of our members and of the public. In addition, I had learnt how to ease conflicts by trying to meet everyone’s demands in a more intellectual manner when looking after problematic children. Even though in the current situation the target audience is certainly different, nonetheless I believe that the skills are applicable to similar conditions such as bridging the gap between the different year groups which I might encounter when serving as a CSS PR.

Apart from my inner personalities, my experiences from growing up in a traditional English boarding school put me in a better position. Undoubtedly I own a certain degree of independence, the ability to organise and control events occurring to me and around me. Therefore when it comes to management in the society, it should not be a difficult task. Furthermore, I had held the responsibility of being a house captain during my final year at high school. Consequently, I will be comfortable in maintaining order and ensuring a great harmony within CSS or between other societies e.g. ChinaRen.

Moving onto publicity, it must be the most vital duty of a PR. From taking part in Young Enterprise in my previous school, I had become aware of the importance of promotion. If you successfully influence your audience by leaving a remarkable image, then it increases the chance of them re-paying you back with their faith and support. I strongly feel that such aspect should be taken on board when committing to CSS. Also other than being persuasive, another key will be to have a wide social circle. Without sufficient socialising skills, only half of the result can be achieved with twice the effort when dealing with the society’s affairs. Aside from academia, I enjoy involving myself in social events such as outings e.g. to Bristol and to Nottingham, dancing, parties as well as productions like the CSS Variety Show. I gained opportunities to broaden my contacts by participating and at the same time, I find out about the spirit of working in a team and its significance in becoming a committee.

In conclusion, you will be able to find the appropriate qualities for a successful PR on me. So do not hesitate and make the right choice when choosing your PR. I will strive to grab every opportunity and challenge myself, making the most trivial matter counts. Also except to convince you, I will assure you that your opinion will be greatly valued. One of my beliefs is that you will never lack room for improvement.

    Uranda Cheung

Good evening everybody. My name is Uranda Cheung and I am presently in my first year studying Pharmacy. Tonight I would like to tell you all why I think I would be suited to the role as the Public Relations Officer for the Chinese Students’ Society next year.

As a Public Relations Officer, one of the major responsibilities is to promote the society, its aims and its events. In order to be able to do this, a candidate with a high level of communication and social skills is inevitable. During my work as a customer services assistant, I had to interact with customers and to process their ideas and thoughts to facilitate a better service for them. This required a lot of co-operation with others and led me to develop various net working skills, which will assist me when socialising with others.

The Public Relations Officer will also need to raise the profile of the society. This includes informing and recruiting new members, not only the prospective Freshers, but also students from other cultures and backgrounds. I know that there are many people who may be interested in joining our society, yet feel too shy to do so. Therefore, I will give my utmost to encourage these students to join us.

Another important role is to be able to form an excellent relationship with other societies within the Students Union and with the Chinese Students’ Society in other universities as well. In being an approachable, friendly and passionate person, I strongly believe that I am capable to carry out a keen relationship with the committee members from other societies. To keep updated with internal and external societies requires a lot of organisation skills which I have enhanced through being both the form and house representative in secondary school. This is also important when persuading prospective sponsors to sponsor our society, such as asking for discounts in certain restaurants.

As a committee member, I will not only have to work under my role, but to also become a key team player. My past experience as the School Events Editor for the school magazine led me to have familiarity with arranging my own team of writers. This entailed me to be very efficient when contacting and informing my team, as well as communicating between the other editors. This further improved my ability as both a leader and a team member.

I am especially interested in the role as the Public Relations Officer as I am very much a “people person”. I am equipped with an easy going personality with the capability to work well with others. The committee members are vital in helping to maintain the reputation of the society and as I am able to establish stable associations with others, I will be a beneficial addition to the committee team.

Although many of you seated here tonight may not be familiar with me, I am asking for your vote. A Public Relations Officer is not based solely on popularity, but also on a high degree of networking skills not only with members, but with anyone who may be interested in the society. External communication is also of major importance to the role and I am full of confidence that I have the ability to do the job, and to do the job well. Thank you very much.
