2009/10 CSS Committee Candidates' Manifestos
INTERNAL SECRETARY
Christie Leung
Hello everyone. I am Christie Leung, a first year psychology student running for the position of internal secretary.
First of all, I would like to thank the current committee for their devoted work this year and I have truly enjoyed them. Having participated in most of them, in particular the hugely successful variety show last month, I deeply appreciate their efforts and am ready to commit myself in a similar way. I am proud to be a member of the crew, although not many of you would have noticed my work in the backstage. The passion I have seen during the preparation is why I am standing for the committee member of the society.
Most people tend to think the job of the internal secretary would be writing agendas, minutes, keeping all the paper work and such, however, in my view there are more than that. Internal secretary is the key of the communication within the committee and hence is vital in maintaining the harmony and fluidity of the society. Having been a secretary in a law firm as a summer intern, I acquire the necessary communication and organization skills to fulfil the job expectations. I was also appointed as a school prefect as well as the vice-president of the class association in my school in Hong Kong, from which I learnt the importance of team work. I am a true believer of team work and I am confident that I can be the crucial person to bond the team together, and then to move forward as a group.
I am also an advanced karate-ka, i.e. a karate kid. Having won 5 medals in 3 regional competitions, karate gives me a taste of success but what I particularly like is the mentality I gain throughout my practices. Of course it is not the violent mentality, but the calm, fearless and never gives up mentality. I am always open up for new challenges and being a member of the society committee is certainly one that I am determined to take up. Even though the campaign has only started for a few days, I understand this is talking about a year-long commitment from an individual regarding the welfare of a group of 400 people. I am eager to devote my time to serve you all. If I am lucky enough to get your vote, I can assure you I will always give my all. So far I have enjoyed my life in this community very much and I hope to continue, and possibly bring in more amusement.
I understand time management is fundamental in this position, therefore I am not going to ramble now. Thank you for your attention.
Please trust in me and vote for me. Thank you very much. Good day!
Vinita Wan
My name is Vinita Wan and I am an undergraduate first year economics student. I am delighted to take this opportunity presenting myself in this annual general meeting, and to compete for the position of internal secretary of the Chinese Students’ Society.
In my opinion, internal secretary is like the heart of an organization. Through my experience in the “Young Enterprise” company, I have gained real life experience as well as communication skills, which will allow me to take this challenge. I have developed satisfactory communication skills that will ensure me to maintain information flows to all the committees and the members, and this is vital for being in this position.
In addition, I am aware that being an internal secretary, I have to be very organized in order to take minutes for every meeting, deal with the members list, and all sorts of documents. My secretarial skills will enable me to finish the jobs that I would be allocated. I am able to use a range of computer programs, such as Microsoft Word, which I am very confident with the basic English and Chinese word-processing. And for last year, as the chairlady of the boarding house council and as the perfect in my old school, my organization skill had definitely elaborated. Work experience in the Harrow Council of the UK government was also useful that I learnt to keep clear and assessable records.
Competed the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award enabled me to work as a part of a team with people from different cultures and backgrounds. Alongside with my experience and skills gained for being an international student for the past 6 years, I totally understand teamwork is very important, so I have confidence to work with the future committees of the Chinese Students’ Society as a team. I believed that my personalities will keep the team’s spirit up in the future as well.
Being an approachable and friendly committee are important qualities as well. They will allow me to seek suggestions from the committees and members, and allow me to approach to the members when they need help. In all my roles, as a library helper and a senior sister in my old school, I have had to learn to be punctual, listen carefully to the others and cooperate with them. I did not know anyone from this university at the beginning; I understand the feeling of lost, the need of help and advice. I was glad that the committees were so kind. This experience will reassure me to be able to listen and provide advices when necessary.
Finally, I hope I can be your next internal secretary and have the honour to serve all of you, who come from different cultures and backgrounds, bringing a cultural society together.
